Trainers with computers buried in their soles will go on sale in the UK this week.
A sensor in the heel of the adidas shoes measures changes in compression each time the wearer's foot touches the ground depending on a hard or soft service.
A microprocessor signals a motor-driven cable system which changes the heel's cushioning level.
The technology is powered by a 100-hours battery.
The first pairs, costing £175, go on sale in specialist adidas shops in London, Manchester and Birmingham on Friday.
