Blockbuster novelist and Fifer Ian Rankin is setting up a scholarship award for budding authors.
Three lucky students a year will be given £500 by Scottish crime writer Ian Rankin.

The donation from the 44-year-old, whose Rebus novels regularly top the bestseller lists, made the offer for anyone taking media and communications or journalism at Fife College, Kirkcaldy.

The author said: 'The staff look at the students' work, then I have a look and we decide who gets it.

'The £500 can be spent on anything. I am not forcing them to buy all of my books!' he added.

Joyce Johnston, principal of Fife College, hailed the generosity of the Cardenden-born author.

She said: 'We are delighted and honoured to receive the support of such a well-known writer with personal ties to Fife.'
