A fish and chip shop owner is out to cook up a storm by emulating record-breaking yachtswoman Ellen MacArthur.
Chippie Kevin Baines aims to raise money for deep sea fisherman by frying non-stop for 12 hours in a charity event.

Baines is confident he can batter the previous record of an 812.4lb (368.5kg) bag of chips set by Alan Williamson at Hereford Racecourse during National Chip Week last year.

He said he takes his inspiration from great British record-breakers such as yachtswoman Ellen MacArthur, who recently set the fastest time for sailing solo around the world.

In contrast to her rollercoaster adventure Baines is hopeful that his bid to fry 2,500lb (1,134kg) of Maris Piper potatoes at The Chip Stop in Plymouth will be plain sailing.

He said: ÔI couldn't sail around the world - but she couldn't cook a huge bag of chips.Õ

The chips will be given away free and the event will raise cash for the Royal National Mission To Deep Sea Fishermen.

Baines expects to use 176 pints (100 litres) of oil, 33lb (15kg) of salt, 53 pints (30 litres) of vinegar, 6,000 chip forks and 53 pints (30 litres) of sauce.
